Enrique Krauze

About

Enrique Krauze, born in Mexico City in 1947, is a historian and essayist. He graduated with a degree in Industrial Engineering from the National Autonomous University of Mexico in 1969 and obtained a Ph.D. in History from El Colegio de México in 1974. From 1977 to 1996 he served as Deputy Editor of Vuelta magazine, edited by Octavio Paz. In 1991 he founded the publishing house Editorial Clío, which produces books and documentaries. Additionally, in 1999, he established the Letras Libres magazine.

As a writer, Enrique Krauze has pursued several genres such as biography, literary and historical essays, and interviews. Some of his publications include Caudillos culturales en la Revolución Mexicana (1976), La reconstrucción económica (1977), Daniel Cosío Villegas / Una biografía intelectual (1980), Por una democracia sin adjetivos (1986), Biografía del poder (1987), Siglo de caudillos (1993), La presidencia imperial (1997), Mexicanos eminentes (1999), Tarea política (2000), Travesía liberal (2003), La presencia del pasado (2004), El poder y el delirio (2008), De héroes y mitos (2010). El arte de la biografía (2012), Octavio Paz. El poeta y la Revolución (2014), El nacimiento de las instituciones (2015), the Ensayista Liberal Collection (2015-2016) which consists of six volumes: Personas e ideas, Caras de la Historia I and Caras de la Historia II, Por una democracia sin adjetivos, Del desencanto al mesianismo and Democracia en construcción, México: Biografía del poder (Tusquets, 2017) and El pueblo soy yo (Debate, 2018).

His work on the history of Mexico has been published by Harper Collins in the United States under the titles Mexico: Biography of Power (1997) and Redeemers (2011).

Krauze is the author of several documentaries and television series about Mexican History. He is also executive producer of the film Beyond Borders: Undocumented Mexican Americans directed by Micah Fink (2016). In addition, he is the executive producer of the documentary El pueblo soy yo. Venezuela en populismo by director Carlos Oteyza (2018).

In 1990 Enrique Krauze started at the Mexican Academy of History. Additionally, he obtained the “Premio Comillas” for Biography in Spain (1993). In 2003, the Spanish Government honored him with the “Gran Cruz de la Orden de Alfonso X, el Sabio.”

In 2005, Krauze became a member of El Colegio Nacional and in 2010, the Government of Mexico granted him the National History Award. In 2012, he received the Bonald Caballero International Essay Award for his book Redeemers. He was also awarded the 2021 Spanish Orders History Prize granted by the Orders of Santiago, Calatrava, Alcántara and Montesa.

Since 1985, Enrique Krauze has published his work in Dissent Magazine, The New Republic, The Washington Post, The New York Review of Books and The New York Times.

 

Other achievements

Magda Donato Literature Award for Cultural leaders in the Mexican Revolution

In 1993 he won the IV Comillas Biography Prize, awarded annually by Tusquets Editores for the best international biography for Siglo de caudillos.

Decoration of the Grand Cross of the Civil Order of Alfonso X El Sabio, Spain

In 2008 he received the Grand Cross of the Order of Isabel la Católica.

In 2010 he was awarded the National Prize for Sciences and Arts in the area of History, Social Sciences and Philosophy.

In 2012 he received the Chapultepec Grand Prize, awarded by the Inter-American Press Association, and the Caballero Bonald International Essay Prize for his book Redentores.
