Carlos Heredia is an economist, academic and former politician. He was a federal congressman from 1997 to 2000. Since 2009, he has been a researcher at the Center for Economic Research and Teaching (CIDE) and has extensive experience in international relations. During the 2000 Mexican presidential elections, Heredia served as advisor and international and economic affairs spokesperson for Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas. Subsequently, he was the general director of Metropolitan Services in the Federal District Government between 2000 and 2002, and later served as the main advisor on international affairs to the governor of Michoacán, Lázaro Cárdenas Batel, between 2003 and 2006.
Since 20212, Heredia is a founding member of the Mexican Council for International Affairs (Comexi) and of the Advisory Council of the Instituto de México at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, which appointed him Global Fellow in 2020.
He is also the author of more than 80 articles, books, and specialized magazines on economics, multilateral banking, foreign policy, international relations, international cooperation for development, citizen diplomacy, territorial development, migration in Central and North America, North American integration, and Mexico-China relations.
Currently, Carlos Heredia participates as a commentator in various media outlets in Mexico, the United States and Canada, and publishes a biweekly opinion column in the newspaper El Universal.
In addition to his studies at ITAM, Carlos Heredia has a master’s degree from McGill University, and a PhD in Economics from UNAM.
