Throughout his diplomatic career, Arturo Sarukhán has been an advisor to former Foreign Secretary Fernando Solana; Chancellor to Rosario Green; and Chief of Staff to the Mexican Ambassador to the United States, Jorge Montaño.
Sarukhán was also Mexico’s ambassador to the Agency for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean (OPANAL), in charge of drug trafficking issues for the Mexican embassy to the United States. He was the consul general of Mexico in New York and the Mexican ambassador to the United States between 2007 and 2013.

Sarukhan studied history at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and has a bachelor’s degree in international relations from El Colegio de Mexico. He has a master’s degree in international relations from Johns Hopkins University.
Sarukhan was also the coordinator of the foreign policy transition team for President-elect Calderón.
Sarukhán also works as a columnist for the newspaper El Universal.
Other achievements
During his tenure as Mexican Ambassador to the United States, he became the dean of the Latin American ambassadors.
He is considered a pioneer of digital diplomacy having been the first accredited ambassador to the United States government to open and use a Twitter account as a public diplomacy tool.
He has been awarded by Sweden and Spain, and has received numerous recognitions for his diplomatic work.
He is the son of José Aristeo Sarukhán Kermez, dean of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) between 1989 and 1997.
